S’mores are the reward currency inside S’moresUp.
Children can earn S’mores by completing chores. Families can use them for rewards, privileges, allowance, savings goals, or shared family experiences.
S’mores make progress visible.
They help a child see:
I completed work. I earned something. Now I have a choice.
How S’mores Are Earned
A parent can set a S’mores value on a chore.
Example:
Chore: Feed the dog
Value: 10 S’mores
When the child completes the chore, the S’mores are awarded according to the setup.
If Parent Approval is required, the S’mores wait until the chore is approved.
If the parent rejects the chore:
- No S’mores are awarded
- The chore returns to the active list
- The family member can correct and submit it again
Who Receives the S’mores?
The chore type decides who earns the value.
Individual
The assigned person receives the full value.
Rotate
The person assigned for that occurrence receives the full value.
Collaborate
The total value is split among participating members.
Compete
The first person to complete the chore receives the full value.
As Needed
The person completing each valid occurrence receives the configured value.
Bonus chore
The person who claims and completes it receives the full value.
This is separate from automatic allocation into Spend, Save, and Goal.
Where Earned S’mores Go
After a chore awards S’mores, automatic allocation can divide them by percentage.
Example:
A child earns 20 S’mores.
The family allocation is:
- 70% Spend
- 20% Save
- 10% Goal
The 20 S’mores are divided according to that rule.
A chore can have its own percentage rule that overrides the global setting.
What S’mores Can Be Used For
Families may use S’mores for:
- Reward Shelf items
- Privileges
- Experiences
- Allowance
- Cash-Out
- Savings goals
- Family activities
- Sending to another family member
Examples:
- Choose the family movie
- Extra game time
- Save toward a book
- Cash out part of the Spend balance
- Send S’mores to a sibling
- Pool S’mores for a family outing
Not Every Chore Needs S’mores
Some responsibilities may be part of being in the family.
Examples:
- Put your own dish in the sink
- Put dirty clothes in the hamper
- Keep personal items in the right place
Other chores may earn S’mores because they:
- Build a new habit
- Require extra effort
- Help the whole family
- Are optional Bonus work
- Support a savings goal
The family decides what fits.
S’mores Are Not Real Money
S’mores can be connected to allowance through a conversion rate, but the points are not money by themselves.
Cash-Out records that the parent will pay the child.
S’moresUp does not transfer money.
This lets families teach earning and saving without turning the app into a bank account.
Manual Bonus and Penalty
Parents cannot normally type over a child’s balance.
They use:
- Bonus to add S’mores
- Penalty to remove S’mores
Manual Bonus goes into Spend.
Penalty removes from Spend.
Both appear as Wallet activity.
Send and Request
Any family member can send S’mores to or request S’mores from another person in the family.
Examples:
- A sibling sends 20 S’mores to help with a shared goal.
- A child requests 10 S’mores they were promised.
- A parent sends S’mores as a special Bonus.
- Family members pool S’mores into one account for a family reward.
Use a clear family rule so children understand when Send and Request are appropriate.
Why S’mores Help
S’mores can teach:
- Effort has value
- Choices have tradeoffs
- Spending now means having less later
- Saving takes time
- Goals require planning
- Family members can share
- Rewards should be earned and approved fairly
The goal is not to make children think only about points.
The goal is to make responsibility and choice easier to understand.
