How to Excuse a Task

Family life changes from day to day. A task that normally makes sense may not fit during travel, illness, a school event, or an unusually busy evening. Excuse lets a parent skip that occurrence without removing the repeating task.

Quick Start

  1. Long-press the task card.
  2. Choose the option to excuse the task.
  3. Confirm the action.
  4. Let the assigned person know the task was excused.

What happens when a task is excused

  • The occurrence is treated as skipped.
  • No S’mores are awarded.
  • The task streak is preserved.
  • The member’s daily streak is preserved.
  • Future occurrences remain active.

Who can excuse a task

  • Only a parent can excuse a task.
  • The assigned child is notified when it is excused.

When to use Excuse

  • Use it when the task truly does not fit that day.
  • Do not use it only to hide a pattern of missed tasks.
  • If the task is often excused, change its schedule, owner, or wording.

Family Example

A child normally takes out the trash on Tuesday, but the family is away. A parent excuses that occurrence. No S’mores are earned, but the task returns on its next scheduled day.

Good to Know

  • Start with the smallest version that solves the problem.
  • Change one setting at a time so you can see what helped.
  • Missed days are information, not proof that your family failed.
  • Open Help in the IAFT app and send a message if something does not work as expected.

Best First Action

Use Excuse only for one task that genuinely does not fit today, then review whether its future schedule still makes sense.
