How the Family Calendar Works

The Family Calendar helps everyone see what is coming up.

It can include:

  • Family events
  • Events for one member
  • Events for selected members
  • Recurring events
  • Event reminders
  • S’moresUp chores
  • Google Calendar items

The Calendar is for planning.

It is not the same as Today’s Progress or Weekly View.

Events Versus Chores

A chore is something a family member completes.

Examples:

  • Feed the dog
  • Pack the backpack
  • Put trash out

An event is something the family needs to know about or attend.

Examples:

  • Soccer practice
  • Dentist appointment
  • Birthday party
  • Family game night

Chores and events can appear together in the same Calendar.

Who Can See an Event

A parent can create an event for:

  • The whole family
  • One family member
  • Selected family members

This helps keep the Calendar relevant.

Example:

A school appointment may be visible to Maya and one parent.

A family dinner may be visible to everyone.

Who Can Create or Edit Events

Only parents can create or edit Calendar events.

Children can see events shared with them but do not manage the event details.

This keeps family planning under adult control.

Event Details

An event can include:

  • Name
  • Start date and time
  • End date and time
  • Location
  • Notes
  • Reminder
  • Family member or members

Events do not currently include:

  • An all-day option
  • Event color
  • Event category

Use clear names because color coding is not available.

Recurring Events

Recurring events are supported.

Examples:

  • Weekly soccer practice
  • Monthly family dinner
  • Regular appointment
  • Annual birthday

When editing a recurring event, a parent can change:

  • This and future events
  • The full series

One occurrence cannot be edited by itself.

Event Reminders

Events can have reminders.

The same event does not have separate parent and child reminder settings.

Choose a reminder that works for the people connected to the event.

Example:

A practice reminder 30 minutes before may give the family enough time to leave.

Chores on the Calendar

The family can choose to display chores on the Calendar.

This can help when:

  • The family plans by time
  • A chore must happen before an event
  • Parents want one view of commitments and responsibilities

Turn chore display off when the Calendar becomes too crowded.

Google Calendar Sync

Google Calendar sync is active in S’moresUp.

This can help families bring external events into the family planning view.

The exact connection, sync direction, duplicate behavior, and disconnect flow should be verified before detailed setup instructions are published.

Sunday or Monday Start

The family can choose Sunday or Monday as the start of the week.

The Calendar updates based on that family-level setting.

Choose the start that matches how the family plans.

Keep the Calendar Current

A useful Calendar needs regular care.

Try:

  • Add confirmed events
  • Remove canceled events
  • Update recurring series
  • Check the right family members
  • Review Google Calendar sync
  • Remove unnecessary reminders
  • Check the coming week together

Choose one adult to keep key events current.

What Not to Put in the Calendar

Avoid using events for:

  • Every tiny reminder
  • Work that should be a chore
  • Private information the whole family should not see
  • Unconfirmed plans
  • Duplicate Google Calendar events
  • Long instructions better placed in notes or chores

Use the right tool for the job.
