What Task Categories Mean

Task categories help you organize tasks into clear groups, such as Home Care, Pet Care, Self Care, Cleaning, or After School. Categories make it easier to find, assign, and review tasks.

Use categories when your task list starts to feel crowded.

Quick Start

  1. Choose one simple task.
  2. Check the owner, timing, and expected result.
  3. Save or complete the task.
  4. Review what happened before adding more.

Why this helps

Clear tasks can reduce repeated reminders and give children a better chance to follow through.

Why categories help

Categories make tasks easier to understand because they group similar responsibilities together.

For example:

  • Pet Care: feed dog, clean litter box, refill water bowl
  • Home Care: unload dishwasher, take out trash, wipe table
  • Self Care: brush teeth, pack school bag, put laundry away
  • After School: unpack backpack, finish homework, put lunchbox away
  • Seasonal: holiday prep, spring cleaning, yard cleanup

This helps both parents and kids see the purpose behind the task.

How to add a category

When creating a task:

  1. Go to the Category section.
  2. Choose an existing category, or tap the add option if available.
  3. Enter a category name.
  4. Add or select an icon if available.
  5. Save the category.
  6. Assign the task to that category.

How to manage categories

If your app version supports category management, you may be able to:

  • Edit a category name
  • Change the icon
  • Delete a category
  • Select from predefined categories
  • Create custom categories for your family

Be careful when deleting categories, especially if tasks are already using them.

Category ideas for families

Try starting with a few simple categories:

  • Morning Routine
  • Evening Routine
  • Kitchen
  • Laundry
  • Pet Care
  • Bedroom
  • School
  • Family Projects

Avoid creating too many categories at first. Too many labels can make the system harder to use.

Family Example

Look at your current task list and group tasks into 4 or 5 categories. If a category has only one task, you may not need it yet.

Good to Know

  • Start with the smallest version that solves the problem.
  • Change one setting at a time so you can see what helped.
  • Missed days are information, not proof that your family failed.
  • Open Help in the IAFT app and send a message if something does not work as expected.
