Removing a family member is different from editing a profile.
Edit the profile when the person is staying in the family but their name, device, PIN, email, or access changes.
Remove the profile only when the person should no longer belong to the S’moresUp household.
This action may affect chores, S’mores, Wallet information, history, Campfire content, and device access.
Review everything before continuing.
Before You Remove Someone
Check:
- Is this the correct profile?
- Is it a duplicate?
- Does the person still use S’moresUp?
- Are active chores assigned to them?
- Are they part of Rotate, Collaborate, or Compete?
- Do they have S’mores in Spend or Save?
- Do they have active reward requests?
- Do they have savings goals?
- Do they have Campfire posts or comments?
- Do they use a connected device?
- Could editing solve the problem instead?
Do not remove a profile only because the person changed devices.
Review Active Chores
Before removal, review:
- Individual chores
- Rotate participant lists
- Collaborate participants
- Compete eligibility
- As Needed access
- Bonus chores
- Approval queues
- Future repeating occurrences
Reassign work that still needs an owner.
Example:
Maya is leaving the family account, but she is part of a Rotate trash chore.
Remove or replace her in the rotation before removing the profile.
Review S’mores and Wallet Information
Check:
- Spend balance
- Save balance
- Reward requests
- Savings goals
- Wallet transactions
- Bonus and Penalty activity
- Allowance or cash-out activity
Do not promise that balances transfer, remain, or disappear until the current product behavior is confirmed.
Record any family information needed before removal.
Review History and Progress
Check:
- Completed chores
- Weekly View
- Streaks
- Activity Log
- Badges
- Reward history
- Wallet history
Removing access and deleting historical records may not be the same action.
Confirm what the current product keeps.
Review Campfire Content
A family member may have:
- Posts
- Photos
- Comments
- Reactions
Confirm whether this content:
- Remains with the family
- Shows the former member’s name
- Is removed
- Can be transferred
- Must be deleted first
Do not guess in the published article.
End Device Access
Removing the profile should also end the person’s family access, but the exact behavior must be verified.
Check:
- Signed-in phones
- Shared tablets
- Invitation links
- Saved PINs
- Notification access
- Adult permissions
Change shared PINs when needed.
Family Creator and Adult Restrictions
A family creator or primary adult may have special permissions.
Confirm:
- Whether the creator can be removed
- Whether ownership must transfer first
- Who can remove another adult
- Whether subscription management must move
- Whether the last adult can be removed
These rules must be verified before publication.
The Removal Flow
After all checks:
- Open the family-member area from an authorized adult profile.
- Choose the correct person.
- Open the remove option.
- Read the warning carefully.
- Confirm the person and family.
- Complete the removal.
- Check active chores.
- Check remaining family access.
- Confirm the removed device no longer receives family updates.
Exact buttons and warnings should be added only after product verification.
When Editing Is Better
Edit instead of remove when:
- The child gets a new phone
- The email changes
- The name changes
- The child needs a new PIN
- The person is temporarily away
- Notification preferences change
- The child needs more or less independence
- The profile photo changes
A temporary absence does not require deletion.
Duplicate Profiles
If a duplicate exists:
- Identify the profile with the correct history
- Stop assigning chores to the duplicate
- Review S’mores and Wallet activity
- Confirm removal behavior
- Remove only after the correct profile is protected
Do not merge or transfer data unless the product supports it.
