How Recurring Calendar Events Work

Recurring events help families avoid creating the same Calendar item again and again.

Use them for plans that repeat on a regular pattern.

Examples:

  • Weekly practice
  • Monthly family dinner
  • Regular appointment
  • Annual birthday
  • Repeating school activity

Only parents can create or edit recurring events.

When to Use a Recurring Event

Use recurrence when:

  • The event follows a clear pattern
  • The same family members usually attend
  • The same location or notes often apply
  • The family needs a consistent reminder

Do not use a recurring event when the dates change often.

A series that needs constant editing may be easier to manage as separate events.

Create the First Event

Start with the first occurrence.

Add:

  • Name
  • Start date and time
  • End date and time
  • Location
  • Notes
  • Reminder
  • Family member or members

Then choose the repeat pattern.

Exact repeat options should be verified in the current app.

Choose the Repeat Pattern

The product supports recurring events.

Common patterns may include:

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Yearly
  • Selected days
  • Custom patterns

Do not publish a complete pattern list until the current Calendar screen is verified.

Choose the simplest rule that matches real life.

Example:

Soccer practice every Tuesday from 5:30 PM to 6:45 PM.

Add an End Point

A recurring event should stop when the real activity stops.

Use an end date or series-ending control where available.

Examples:

  • Sports season
  • School club
  • Short-term appointment series
  • Summer program

An annual birthday may continue without a near end date.

Edit This and Future Events

Use This and future when the series changes from one point forward.

Example:

Practice moves from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM starting next month.

The earlier events remain unchanged.

The selected event and later events use the new time.

Edit the Full Series

Use Full series when the entire repeating setup should change.

Examples:

  • Correct the event name
  • Correct the regular location
  • Change all reminders
  • Update all members
  • Fix a series created with the wrong time

Review the result carefully.

One Occurrence Cannot Be Edited Alone

S’moresUp does not currently support editing only one event in a recurring series.

When one date is different, the available edit choices are:

  • This and future
  • Full series

Before changing the series, decide whether a separate one-time event is a better way to record the exception.

Example:

One practice moves to another field for one week.

Because a single occurrence cannot be edited alone, the parent may need to keep the series and create a separate event or note for the exception, based on the current family process.

Delete a Recurring Event

A recurring series may need to end because:

  • The activity is canceled
  • The season ends
  • The family no longer attends
  • The series was created by mistake

Confirm whether deletion offers:

  • This and future
  • Full series

Review the warning before confirming.

Recurring Event Reminders

A recurring event can have a reminder.

The same event does not use separate parent and child reminders.

Choose one reminder that works for the members attached to the event.

If one person needs a different reminder, the family may need a separate personal system outside that event.

Google Calendar and Recurring Events

Google Calendar sync is active.

Recurring items may also come from Google Calendar.

Before editing or deleting a synced series, check:

  • Which calendar created it
  • Whether the change should happen in Google Calendar or S’moresUp
  • Whether duplicate series exist
  • How the current sync direction works

The exact source-of-truth behavior should be verified.

Example

Event: Piano lesson
Repeat: Every Thursday
Start: 4:00 PM
End: 4:45 PM
Member: Noah
Location: Music school
Reminder: 30 minutes before

Starting in September, the lesson moves to 5:00 PM.

Choose This and future so the earlier history stays at 4:00 PM and later lessons move to 5:00 PM.

Common Problems

The change affected more events than expected

Check whether Full series was selected.

One event needs a different time

One-occurrence editing is not supported. Use a clear one-time workaround.

The event keeps appearing after the season ends

Check the series end setting.

Duplicate recurring events appear

Review Google Calendar sync and the S’moresUp series.

The wrong family members see every event

Edit the series members.
