How to Restart After the Family Stops Using S’moresUp

Families stop using chore systems for many reasons:

  • Schedule changed
  • Too many chores were added
  • Children stopped checking
  • Reminders became noisy
  • Rewards lost meaning
  • The family traveled
  • A parent became busy
  • The setup no longer fit the children

Restarting does not require rebuilding everything.

First, Check the Family State

The family may be:

  • Active but unused
  • Archived or inactive
  • Set to Away for one or more children
  • Permanently deleted

A deleted family cannot be recovered.

An archived family may offer:

  • Unfreeze & continue
  • Start Fresh

Choose Unfreeze When You Want the Old Family

Unfreeze & continue is the better choice when the family wants to preserve:

  • Chores
  • Rewards
  • History
  • Family members
  • Existing setup

The restore may take time.

Wait for the family to return before creating duplicate data.

Use Start Fresh Carefully

Start Fresh resets:

  • Setup
  • Streaks
  • PINs

It is not a normal troubleshooting button.

Use it only when the family truly wants a new setup.

Do not choose it only because the old chore list is too large.

You can simplify the existing family instead.

Set Children Back to Home

If a child is Away, their chores remain excused and hidden.

Switch the child back to Home manually.

There is no automatic Away end date.

Check each child profile after travel or a long break.

Remove Before Adding

Review the old chore list.

Delete or pause what no longer fits.

Look for:

  • Old school routines
  • Expired activities
  • Repeated chores that never worked
  • Rewards no one wants
  • Too many reminders
  • Chores assigned to the wrong person

A restart should usually begin with fewer items.

Choose Three Chores

For the first week back, choose:

  • One daily responsibility
  • One school or personal routine
  • One shared or weekly chore

Keep the list easy to scan.

Add more only after the family is using the system again.

Reset Expectations with the Family

Say:

We are restarting with a smaller setup. We will try it for one week and change what does not fit.

Explain:

  • Which chores matter
  • Who owns them
  • When they happen
  • Whether S’mores are used
  • When the family will review

Do not begin the restart with a lecture about the old failure.

Refresh the Reward Shelf

Remove rewards that are:

  • No longer interesting
  • Too expensive
  • Impossible to provide
  • Based on an old schedule
  • Repeatedly rejected

Add one small reward and one larger goal.

Reduce Reminder Noise

Keep one reminder per important chore.

Remove alerts that do not lead to action.

Premium families can add multiple reminders later if each one has a separate purpose.

Use Campfire for the Restart

Post a simple update:

We are restarting with three chores this week. Friday we will celebrate one thing that worked.

Use Campfire for encouragement, not repeated correction.

Hold a Short Review

After one week:

  • Celebrate one win
  • Remove one problem chore
  • Change one due time
  • Ask each child one question
  • Add nothing unless the system feels easy

The goal is rebuilding trust in the system.

Common Problems

The old setup is too large

Remove chores rather than using Start Fresh immediately.

Children are still Away

Switch them back to Home.

The family was deleted

It cannot be recovered.

Premium settings look different

Check the current plan and review important chores.
